Jay Smith has done much work about the origins of Islam based on the previous works of renowned scholars Patricia Krone and Dan Gibson

There are no mentions of Muhammad before about 690 AD. No mention of the word "Muslim" before about 690 AD. No evidence of any Quran before about 690 AD.

It actually appears that Muhammad was redacted back and used as a kind of revelator in order to build the religion of Islam.

It looks to have been propagated by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, the Umayyad caliph who built the Dome of the Rock in the late 7th and early 8th c. He appears to be the real originator of Islam.

The stories about the quran being written down around 650 AD and Uthman burning the manuscripts likely never occurred. These stories were all made up because the new conquerors needed a religion to tie their new empire together. They needed something to counter the Christianity of the Byzantine empire they had just conquered. They needed a Revelation and a Revelator. Hence the Quran and Muhammad. It's possible, Muhammad really had nothing to do with Islam, but was a folk hero of sorts they redacted back and wrote into the storyline of their new religion and ideology.

These are great videos. The last one by Dan Gibson shows that Petra was actually the initial qibla and direction of prayer...NOT Jerusalem and certainly not Mecca. Though it rhymes with Mecca, the Becca, spoken of in Q3:96, is actually a reference to Petra.

Interesting things are coming to light concerning the origins of this so-called religion.
